If you’re an online marketer, especially if you haven’t yet made your first dollar, you might be asking the question
“How can I make money with twitter?”
It’s definitely a question I asked myself before I really figured out how to use twitter.
Over a year and at least 2 twitter accounts later, I think I’ve found the answer (well 2 actually) and it’s not some kind of panacea –
Stop trying to make money with twitter
It’s just not what networking is about. If you really want to use twitter to increase your bottom line, forget about tweeting affiliate links and try to be helpful instead. Stop selling and just talk to others like they are your friends – ask questions and provide answers. No rocket science there then.
Like the Taxman, marketers are everywhere – vying for your attention. As soon as there is an opportunity to populate a new platform (first print, then radio and TV, and now the web) marketers will be waiting with their flashy banners and smart psychology, ready to push your buttons. It’s basic capitalism, human nature. But this approach is changing – most of those vultures will not make a dime selling directly in the social media. And worst of all – they make us all look bad.
Anybody who is successful with twitter (or any other social channel for that matter) understands that we buy from people that we know, like and trust. In other words, we buy from people we can relate to – it’s all about reputation. When you tweet, try to focus on these core values and always aim to add value.
To be honest, I don’t want to sell to anyone on twitter, there is only 1 chance to get somebody’s attention and I don’t want to risk wasting it. Before I press the tweet button, I always ask myself -
“will this make someone else’s day better?”
If the answer is not 100% yes, I veto the post. Simple as that.
And number 2?
You’ll have to wait for that….
