Remember that amazing feeling you used to get as a 7 year-old, returning to school after the summer break and writing the first line in a brand new exercise book. Remember how is was all clean and perfect and your first page was always going to be immaculately written, a sign of things to come….

Well here it is, my first post – no pressure.

Let’s start at the beginning
I spend my days working as an academic researcher investigating the immunology of gene and cell therapies. At the end of it, I’ll get a PhD. I have to admit it sounds pretty impressive at dinner parties. But it’s not very rock n roll.

The second part of my double life, I run a membership site providing free website promotion tools that focuses on helping internet marketers drive traffic through their marketing funnel. Silicon Shovel is another channel to engage with the world, and cover topics that don’t quite fit into the traffic exchange world.

I like to keep things simple and I’ll do anything for an easy life. I love trying new approaches to solving old problems and anything that makes my life simpler is probably worth sharing. I like cool things that make me smarter, faster, sexier and richer. So as well as discussing some tools that can help you grow your business, there’ll be a healthy dose of lifestyle stuff too and hopefully you can also learn a thing or two about social networking, outsourcing, managing yourself, software and anything else that pops into my head.

Silicon Shovel will serve as my repository for betterment – stuff that makes life simpler and more enjoyable. A kind of virtual scrapbook of all the things I like and do. And If there’s something that’s useful to me, you can bet it will be useful to you too.

So if it makes the cut, I’ll share my experiences of products, tools and systems that I am using to grow my online businesses and help you fast-track through some of the stickier parts of your learning curve. Of course, I never proclaim that I’m some sort of sage or guru – I know enough to realize that I’m far from being a maven. But I do know that there are others trying to make an honest buck online and who are maybe just a few steps behind (or ahead of) me. If that resonates with you, then I want to get to know you.

But remember, this is a 2-way street – If you have something to say, then say it. If you know something useful, you can guarantee that there will be someone who doesn’t. Sharing your information freely gives you a little bit of power and that can come in pretty handy down the line. We’re always learning and adding your bit can only help make Silicon Shovel a more valuable community.

There’s power in numbers and if we can stick together, we have a far better chance of reaching our destination. There’s a great African saying that I was reminded of recently (watching Al Gore’s TED talk).

“If you want to go quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”
